How to Build Great Kitchen Cutlery Sets

Seeking 1 or 2 fine kitchen cutlery sets? Then begin your research on the various knives you'll need. Each knife in any of the different types of kitchen cutlery sets on the market has its own unique function.

Chef Knife

The following are the knives you'll need:

Chef Knife

Chef's Knife

You will use The Cook's Knife, also known as the Chef's Knife, for difficult jobs like dicing food. It ranges between 6 and 12 inches in length. You'll find that the blade is curved, which will help you perform tasks on the cutting board. Think of it as the "work horse" knife. Yet, and this is a little knife trivia for you, the Chef's Knife is somewhat infamous as the knife used in the movie Halloween.

The Bread Knife

Okay, now to test your "Knife Knowledge". The Bread Knife, around eight inches long, is used in any of the top kitchen cutlery sets, to...yup, you guessed it, slice bread.

The Paring Knife

At only three inches long, you may think the Paring Knife doesn't bring much value to your kitchen cutlery set. However, don't underestimate it. You'll use it for coring and peeling, which, as any chef knows, is an imperative kitchen task.

The Utility Knife

At around 6 inches, on average, in length, the Utility Knife is somewhat of the kitchen cutlery sets' "step child". It has no specialty but is often used for random tasks.

The Steak Knife

Perhaps a favorite knife is the Steak Knife - favorite because, other than your personal dining knife, it's the knife closest to the food at meal time. It's used to slice meat at the dinner table prior to serving, quickly easing the hunger pains of your family and dining guests. It's about 5 inches in length.

The Cleaver

The Cleaver, which, to its chagrin, looks rather ominous, is actually a helpful tool to have in the kitchen. It's a handy "knife" that is perfect for chopping and cutting bone.

The Boning Knife

As you may have guessed, or known, you'd use a Boning Knife to remove bones from cuts of meat. Unlike the above mentioned cleaver, which cuts through bone, the boning knife worms its way into small places and literally "ejects" the bone from the meat. It's about 6 inches long.

The Fillet Knife

A Fillet Knife is a longer version of the boning knife, about 10 inches, used to, you guessed it, fillet fish.

So many knives! But now that you have passed Knives 101, the course they never gave you in high school Home Economics but should have, you are prepared to purchase kitchen cutlery sets for you, your friends and your family!

Black Friday Global G-2 8-Inch 20cm Cook's Knife Overview

This 8-in. all-purpose Chef's Knife is Global's most popular knife. Your top choice for slicing large quantities of vegetables, fruit and meat quickly and effectively. Loved by professional chefs around the world, Global knives are an excellent choice for the serious home cook. The thin and razor sharp Global blade allows the cook to cleanly slice through foods, preserving the integrity of the ingredient and maximizing its flavor. The majority of Global knives are ground to a straight point rather than the western style of beveling the edge. To balance their knives Global uses a hollow handle that is filled with just the right amount of sand to create the correct balance. The handle has its own unique darkened dimples for a non-slip grip. Because the knives are very light weight they reduce hand fatigue. Global knives have a smooth contour and seamless, all stainless construction that eliminates food and dirt traps. Global knifes are forged in Japan from CROMOVA 18 Stainless Steel, a blend of 18 percent chromium for good stain resistance plus molybdenum and vanadium which gives excellent edge retention..

Black Friday Global G-2 8-Inch 20cm Cook's Knife Specifications

High tech from tip to handle, Global knives from Japan created a sensation when they burst onto the world's culinary stage as an alternative to traditional European-style cutlery. Blades are made of hard molybdenum/vanadium stainless steel and "face-ground" with a long taper rather than a short bevel so edges remain sharp longer than even the best high-carbon stainless-steel knives. Edges also are ground at a more acute angle than traditional European-style knives and arrive from the factory razor-sharp. Although Global also makes a "heavyweight" line for cooks who prefer hefty knives, its original knives--of which this 8-inch chef's knife is an example--have thinner blades and are lighter than traditional European-style knives. Global also dispensed with bolsters on its original knives to reduce weight. Balance is achieved by injecting a precise amount of sand for a particular blade style into a hollow handle. To ensure balance is continuous, the sand flows inside the handle as a blade is maneuvered. A finger notch between blade and handle provides safety.

Stainless-steel handles are Global's most striking feature. They're molded to fit the hand and dimpled to resist slipping. Smaller around than many European-style handles, they're easy for small-handed cooks to grasp and seamless for sanitation. Global recommends using a ceramic sharpener or a diamond steel instead of a metal sharpening steel for its knives, supplemented by a synthetic whetstone, a ceramic whetstone, or a Shinkansen sharpener. Global also makes a Sharpening Guide Rail so blades can be honed on a whetstone at the proper angle. Global knives should be hand washed to protect edges. They carry a lifetime warranty against defects and breakage. --Fred Brack
