If you're moving in to your first home, the kitchen is one portion of the home where you need to stack up on basic equipment. There is no established rule as to what you should have in your kitchen, but here are a few tips on what will come handy as you prepare your meals on the daily basis.
You should have these basic items which will become quite indispensable in your cooking activities:
Chef Knife
Cooking Pots and Pans: The usually come in sets which are quite handy and consist of casserole pans, skillets and a sauce pan. Depending on the number of people you cook for, you can get these individually or in a set combination. These are available in stainless steel, cast iron, aluminium or copper. It is also advisable to get a non-stick frying pan for cooking eggs, pancakes, and other quick to fry dishes. Cooking Utensils: These consist of cooking spoons, ladles, tongs, spatulas that aid you in the cooking process. Choose the types that don't scratch your pans and it is a good idea to invest in quality-made utensils since you'll be using these day in and day out. Different Types of Knives and a Cutting Board: Don't scrimp on your budget when purchasing kitchen knives. Like cooking utensils, you will be using them throughout your life as long as you eat. You will need a chef's knife, a butcher knife, a paring knife and a few other regular and serrated types for different cutting purposes. Usually, they come complete in a set with a pair of kitchen scissors which also come quite handy. Can and bottle opener, peeler, mixing bowls and cheese grater: These are items you usually miss out but realize how important they can get when you need them. Have at least one plus a spare in your kitchen inventory. Colander and sieves: These two items are much needed for washing fruits and vegetables, draining pasta and fried foods, and for baking purposes. Potholders and Kitchen Towels: You'll use a lot of these with your daily cooking activities so have at least 2 or 3 potholders and about a dozen kitchen towels.
Having these basic kitchen equipments and aids will make daily cooking quite convenient for you. So before you move in to your new apartment or home, make sure you have these in handy so you don't need to rush out in the middle of your cooking!
